  •   United Kingdom
  • $$  Full cost of UK/EU tuition fees, plus a stipend

This scholarship is funded by Airbus Group Endeavr Wales.

Subject areas: Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Materials

Start date: October 2018

Perovskite solar cells are perhaps the hottest topic in the field of solar cells because it has high power conversion efficiency and potentially be fabricated at much lower cost than silicon solar cells. Furthermore, they have unusual properties such as they are very thin/light-weight and pretty flexible, which makes them have super-high specific power (power generated per weight of the solar cells), and ultra-high flexibility. These special properties imply that they have attractive potential for space applications, which specific power and stowed volume is key issue. The aim of the project is to study their stability under mimic space environment and fabricate flexible perovskite solar cells for space applications. The student will characterize the perovskite films/devices by a range of advanced characterization techniques and fabricate the solar cells with the world class fabrication facilities at SPECIFIC, Swansea University. Furthermore, there are opportunities for the student to use the facilities at Airbus Defence and Space, and Imperial College London (Professor James Durrant). The student will be supervised by Dr Wing Chung Tsoi.
