Call for Scholarship Applications under the TAGDev 2.0 Programme for the 2026/2027 Academic Year at the University of Port Harcourt.
The Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture (RUFORUM) in partnership with Mastercard Foundation are implementing a 10 year (2023-2033) Transforming African Agricultural Universities to Meaningfully Contribute to Africa’s Growth and Development (TAGDev 2.0) Programme. The Programme seeks to strengthen universities and TVET institutions to better serve communities by skilling and empowering Africa’s young people and their institutions to drive inclusive, equitable and climate resilient transformation of agriculture and agri-food systems.
The Programme will support young African students that are economically disadvantaged but, academically competent to enable them to complete their studies
University of Port Harcourt Information
Established in 1975, University of Port Harcourt is a non-profit public higher education institution located in the suburban setting of the large city of Port Harcourt (population range of 1,000,000-5,000,000 inhabitants), Rivers. Officially accredited and/or recognized by the National Universities Commission, Nigeria, University of Port Harcourt (Uniport) is a very large (uniRank enrollment range: 35,000-39,999 students) coeducational higher education institution. University of Port Harcourt (Uniport) offers courses and programs leading to officially recognized higher education degrees such as pre-bachelor degrees (i.e. certificates, diplomas, associate or foundation degrees), bachelor degrees, master degrees, doctorate degrees in several areas of study. This 44 years old higher-education institution has a selective admission policy based on entrance examinations and students' past academic record and grades. The admission rate range is 0-10% making this Nigerian higher education organization a most selective institution. International applicants are eligible to apply for enrollment.
Eligibility Criteria
Who is eligible to apply?
- Scholarships are open to candidates in Nigeria from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
- Candidates from conflict and post-conflict areas of Africa residing in Nigeria are also encouraged to apply.
- The applicant must be in position to qualify for admission into undergraduate or postgraduate programmes at University of Port Harcourt.
- All applicants should read and thoroughly understand the admission criteria for the relevant programmes at University of Port Harcourt.
- Students already having a scholarship of any kind are not eligible to benefit from this scholarship opportunity. Anyone with a double scholarship, if found, will automatically be discontinued. Beneficiaries of TAGDev scholarships are not eligible to apply.
Undergraduates Programme:
- BSc. Agricultural Economics
- BSc. Agribusiness Management
- BSc. Agricultural Extension and Development Studies
- BSc. Animal Science
- BSc. Food Science and Nutrition
Candidates seeking admission into any of the undergraduate programmes must:
- Possess five O-Level credits in GCE/SSCE/NECO1 or its equivalent in the following subjects: Mathematics, English Language, Chemistry, Biology or Agricultural Science and any one of Physics, Economics or Geography at not more than two sittings.
- Pass the UTME2, which must include: Use of English, Chemistry, Mathematics or Physics, and Biology or Agricultural Science.
- Must choose University of Port Harcourt as first choice institution during UTME online registration
- Pass the post-UTME screening exercise of the University of Port Harcourt.
- Foreign applicants that satisfy condition 1st condition above are exempted from conditions (2) and (3) above.
Post-Graduate Admission Requirements:
- MSc. Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences
- MSc. Agribusiness Management

All candidates are required to possess:
- A credit pass in English Language and Mathematics to be eligible for admission into any programme at the University of Port Harcourt.
- At least, a Second-Class Honours degree in the relevant disciplines from the University of Port Harcourt or any recognized University.
- A Bachelor’s degree, at least, a second-class degree, while those applying for a doctorate degree must possess master’s degree in their selected course of study.
- Application forms must be submitted with copies of degree certificate(s), NYSC discharge certificate (Nigerians only), O/ Level certificate, birth certificate/affidavit of age declaration, marriage certificate/newspaper publication for change of name, local government identification letter (Nigerians only) or international passport (foreigners), receipts of payments for application forms.
