It has been agreed upon that DAAD cooperates with the West Africa Centre for Crop Improvement (WACCI) by offering up to 3 In-Country and 6 In-Region scholarships for Master studies at the West Africa Centre for Crop Improvement (WACCI) for the intake 2021

The programme aims at fostering strong, internationally oriented higher education systems in Sub-Saharan Africa with the capacity to contribute to sustainable development. To this end, scholarships are granted for development-related Master or doctoral studies for individuals who plan to pursue a career in teaching and / or research at a higher education institution in Sub-Saharan Africa.

WACCI Masters Plant Breeding Scholarships for Africans, University of Ghana Established in 1948, University of Ghana is a non-profit public higher education institution located in the urban setting of the large city of Legon (population range of 1,000,000-5,000,000 inhabitants), Greater Accra. This institution has also branch campuses in the following location(s): Korle-Bu, Accra City. Officially accredited and/or recognized by the National Accreditation Board, Ghana (National Accreditation Board, Ghana), University of Ghana (UG) is a very large (uniRank enrollment range: 30,000-34,999 students) coeducational higher education institution. University of Ghana (UG) offers courses and programs leading to officially recognized higher education degrees such as pre-bachelor degrees (i.e. certificates, diplomas, associate or foundation degrees), bachelor degrees, master degrees, doctorate degrees in several areas of study. This 71 years old higher-education institution has a selective admission policy based on entrance examinations and students' past academic record and grades. The admission rate range is 30-40% making this Ghanaian higher education organization a very selective institution. International applicants are eligible to apply for enrollment.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants

  1. have successfully completed generally a three-year university degree (Master candidates) (at least: Second Class/Upper Division)
  2. clearly show motivation and strong commitment
  3. have thorough knowledge of the language of instruction
  4. have generally completed their last university degree not more than 6 years ago at the time of application
  5. must be nationals or permanent resident of a Sub-Saharan African country
  6. should generally be a) staff member of a public university, b) candidate considered for teaching or research staff recruitment, c) from the public sector, d) Alumni of the DAFI programme
  7. Female applicants and candidates from less privileged regions or groups are especially encouraged to participate in the programme.

Offered Benefits

The scholarship covers:

  1. Tuition fees* annually
  2. Study and research allowance annually
  3. Printing allowance once at the end
  4. Monthly Scholarship (Accommodation, Food etc.)
    1. monthly 500 EUR (PhD In-Country)
    2. 550 EUR (PhD In-Region)
  5. Travel allowance (In-Region only): twice (beginning/end of scholarship)
  6. Health insurance(In-Region only)

Application Process

The application process contains two steps. Please be aware of the two application deadlines.

  1. First step: Applicants must apply for their studies at the West Africa Centre for Crop Improvement (WACCI) using the contacts and the method that is prescribed by the institution. The West Africa Centre for Crop Improvement (WACCI) has set its own deadlines. Additionally, once you submit your application to West Africa Centre for Crop Improvement (WACCI), please send a short notification to DAAD that you have applied with the subject “Your Surname_First name_WACCI” to the email address of the DAAD contact person given below.
  2. Second step: The West Africa Centre for Crop Improvement (WACCI) will provide the shortlisted candidates with the link to the DAAD-Portal. Only the pre-selected candidates are asked to log into the DAAD portal, register themselves and submit an DAAD application.

  1. DAAD application form duly filled in (available in the DAAD-Portal)
  2. Hand signed curriculum vitae (please use the European specimen form at http://europass.cedefop. Europa.eu), including a list of publications (if applicable).
  3. Recommendation letter by university teachers (Master 1)
  4. Letter of admission for the host institution
  5. Certified copies of university degree certificates including transcripts
  6. Letter of motivation and a timetable (if applicable: mentioning the planned research stay in Germany, see “Additional benefits”)
  7. Copy of the passport
  8. If applicable, information on the UNHCR registration as refugee
