Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) is inviting applicants to apply for a PhD Position in Spectral Sensor Development for Additive Manufacturing within the Brussels Photonics Research Group. The successful candidate will work on developing advanced spectroscopic sensing systems for real-time process monitoring in additive manufacturing.

To be eligible for this PhD position, applicants must hold a master’s degree in physics, photonics, applied mathematics, electrical engineering, or a related field. Eligibility Criteria

  • Eligible Countries: All nationalities (EEA and non-EEA)
  • Acceptable Course or Subjects: The scholarship will be awarded in the field of Photonics, Optical Engineering, Applied Physics, or related disciplines.
  • Admissible Criteria: To be eligible, applicants must meet the following criteria:
    • Hold a master’s degree in physics, photonics, applied mathematics, electrical engineering, or a related field.
    • Have interest and preferably experience in optical spectroscopy, Raman sensing, or experimental optical setups involving lasers, spectrometers, and fiber optics.
    • Possess good programming skills (Matlab, Python, or similar).
    • Knowledge of numerical techniques and simulation tools (e.g., ANSYS Zemax OpticsStudio) is a plus.
    • Demonstrate strong independent research capability, critical thinking, and excellent communication skills.
    • Have proficiency in English (CEFR level C1 or equivalent).
    • Be willing to travel for conferences and research collaborations.
    • Meet VUB’s permit and residence requirements for international researchers.
