The Wellington Kahurangi Scholarship recognises exceptional Maori students. We encourage applicants who have achieved academically and within the areas of culture, community involvement, and leadership.

The scholarship package includes full accommodation costs* for the first year on the Marino Floor in Joan Stevens hall of residence, where tikanga M?ori (M?ori cultural practices) and te reo M?ori (M?ori language) are part of everyday life. There is dedicated pastoral support, plus $5,000 towards tuition fees in the second and third years of study. For students who are not in a hall, a $15,000 fees contribution can be taken evenly across three years.

Victoria University of Wellington 2023 Kahurangi Scholarship (School-leaver scholarships for exceptional Maori students) for Bachelor Founded in 1897, Victoria University of Wellington is a non-profit public higher education institution located in the urban setting of the large town of Wellington (population range of 50,000-249,999 inhabitants). Officially accredited and/or recognized by the Ministry for Tertiary Education, Skills and Employment, New Zealand, Victoria University of Wellington is a large (uniRank enrollment range: 15,000-19,999 students) coeducational higher education institution. Victoria University of Wellington offers courses and programs leading to officially recognized higher education degrees such as bachelor degrees in several areas of study. Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicants must be of Maori descent, have a strong connection to their whakapapa and be registered with at least one iwi.
  • Applicants are expected to have their NCEA Level 2 Certificate endorsed with Merit from Year 12 (or an equivalent level of achievement in an alternate qualification).
  • Applicants must be intending to enrol full-time in the year following application in their first undergraduate degree at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington.
  • Applicants must be in Year 13 or have completed Year 13 in the year prior and be taking a gap year to be eligible to apply for this scholarship.

A completed online application must be submitted by 4.30 pm on the closing date. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. Any required supporting documentation (including references) must also be received by 4.30 pm on the closing date in order for the application to be considered.

Required Documents:

  • A one-page personal statement outlining any attributes of leadership and/or commitment to your community.
  • A reference from your school (to be requested via the online application).
  • A reference from a Kaumatua such as an iwi representative of a Runanga or Trust Board that can endorse your whakapapa (to be requested via the online application).
