University of Sheffield Research Scholarships for Black or Black British (of African or Caribbean heritage), Asian or Asian British (of Bangladeshi, Pakistani and Indian heritage) or Multiple Ethnic Background for PhD Founded in 1905, The University of Sheffield is a non-profit public higher education institution located in the urban setting of the medium-sized city of Sheffield (population range of 500,000-1,000,000 inhabitants), Yorkshire and the Humber. Officially accredited and/or recognized by the Privy Council, The University of Sheffield is a large (uniRank enrollment range: 25,000-29,999 students) coeducational higher education institution. The University of Sheffield offers courses and programs leading to officially recognized higher education degrees such as bachelor degrees in several areas of study. Eligibility Criteria

  • Eligible Countries: UK
  • Acceptable Course or Subjects: Any subject offered by the university
  • Admissible Criteria: Applicants must:
  • Identify as Black or Black British (of African or Caribbean heritage), Asian or Asian British (of Bangladeshi, Pakistani and Indian heritage), or are of multiple ethnic backgrounds including one of the ethnicity groups listed above
  • Have, or expect to achieve, a first or upper second class UK honours degree or equivalent
  • Meet any other entry requirements stipulated by the chosen department
  • Be applying to start their first year of study on a full-time or part-time PhD in the 2024/25 academic year.

Offered Benefits

The scholarships cover tuition fees and a tax-free stipend at the UKRI rate (£19,237 in 2024), as well as a generous training and development allowance. These scholarships fund up to three and a half years full-time or seven years part-time study, subject to satisfactory progress. Part-time studentships are paid at 50% of the full-time rate.

Application Process

Applicants are required to submit a study application via the Postgraduate Online Application Form and attach their completed declaration form. Applicants must select a start date of no earlier than 1st September 2024.  Applicants to the Faculty of Social Science should visit the faculty webpage and contact the department they wish to apply to in the first instance. The application deadline is June 14th, 2024. Applicants to the Faculty of Health can apply to one or more of the projects by June 26th, 2024.
