The Human Rights Scholarship was established by the University of Melbourne and awarded to students who are undertaking research in the field of human rights. The University usually awards two scholarships per year.

You must submit an application for the Human Rights Scholarship:

Current students who are enrolled in a research degree for which they wish to receive a Human Rights Scholarship must apply through the Student Portal (Student Admin tab) Other students must complete an Application for Admission to Graduate Research Degree Candidature and Scholarship and indicate that you wish to be considered for the Human Rights Scholarship.

University of Melbourne - Human Rights Scholarship Established in 1853, The University of Melbourne is a non-profit public higher education institution located in the urban setting of the large city of Melbourne (population range of 1,000,000-5,000,000 inhabitants), Victoria. Officially accredited and/or recognized by the Department of Education and Training, Australia, The University of Melbourne (UNIMELB) is a very large (uniRank enrollment range: over-45,000 students) coeducational higher education institution. The University of Melbourne (UNIMELB) offers courses and programs leading to officially recognized higher education degrees such as pre-bachelor degrees (i.e. certificates, diplomas, associate or foundation degrees), bachelor degrees, master degrees, doctorate degrees in several areas of study. This 166 years old higher-education institution has a selective admission policy based on students' past academic record and grades. The admission rate range is 70-80% making this Australian higher education organization a somewhat selective institution. International applicants are eligible to apply for enrollment.

Eligibility Criteria

To be considered for this scholarship, you must:

  • have completed tertiary studies that are at least equivalent to a 4-year honours degree at an Australian university with a minimum result of upper second class honours;
  • have applied for or be enrolled in a graduate research degree at the University of Melbourne in the area of human rights; and
  • be committed to the peaceful advancement of respect for human rights that extends beyond academic studies (such as voluntary work and/or work experience);
  • not have completed a course deemed to be at the same level or higher than the course for which you have applied for or enrolled in; and
  • not have previously received a Human Rights Scholarship

In addition, applicants who have commenced their graduate research degree at the University of Melbourne must have at least 12 months full-time or equivalent candidature remaining.

Offered Benefits

The duration of this scholarship is up to two years for students undertaking a Master by research degree and up to three years, with a possible six month extension, for students undertaking a Doctorate by research degree. The following benefits apply: A fortnightly living allowance of $28,000 per annum (pro-rata); and The following benefits in line with the Australian Postgraduate Awards benefits: A fortnightly living allowance Relocation grant for students moving to Melbourne from interstate or from outside Australia Thesis allowance  Limited paid sick, maternity and parenting leave Note that the Human Rights Scholarship does not cover tuition fees for international students.
