University of Exeter Business School MRes + PhD Scholarships in Economics for Black British Researchers, UK Established in 1955, University of Exeter is a non-profit public higher education institution located in the suburban setting of the large town of Exeter (population range of 50,000-249,999 inhabitants), South West England. Officially accredited and/or recognized by the Privy Council, University of Exeter is a large (uniRank enrollment range: 20,000-24,999 students) coeducational higher education institution. University of Exeter offers courses and programs leading to officially recognized higher education degrees such as bachelor degrees, master degrees, doctorate degrees in several areas of study. This 64 years old higher-education institution has a selective admission policy based on students' past academic record and grades. International applicants are eligible to apply for enrollment.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Eligible Countries: An applicant who identifies as Black (Black or Black British African, Black or Black British Caribbean, Black or Black British other or Mixed Black or Black British) is eligible to apply.
  • Acceptable Course or Subjects: PhD degree in Economics pathway completes the two-year MRes in economics, which prepares students for a PhD in an area requiring a strong grounding in econometrics (e.g., economics). Decisions on PhD topics and supervision will be made towards the end of the MRes, giving students plenty of time to explore a range of topics and to meet the faculty.
  • Admissible Criteria: To be eligible, the applicants must meet all the following criteria:
  • Applicants have one of the following categories of ethnicity:
  • Black African
  • Black Caribbean
  • Black Other
  • Mixed – White and Black Caribbean
  • Mixed – White and Black African
  • Another mixed background (to include Black African, Black Caribbean, or Black Other).
  • They are an applicant for full-time study at the MRes-PhD level, and
  • They are UK students with ‘Home’ tuition fee status.
  • They have a very generous funding scheme to support the most outstanding students who wish to complete a PhD in Economics. Successful applicants first receive funding to complete one of the University of Exeter Business School’s Research Masters (MRes), which provides a rigorous foundation in the skills that are required to conduct high-quality research. Students who meet the PhD entry criteria will then receive funding for full-time study in one of the University of Exeter Business School’s PhD programs.

  • Annual total (i.e., remuneration + stipend): £21,789.60
    • Full tuition fees at the UK fee rate
    • Remuneration for 180 hours teaching: circa £3238.20 (2022/23 rate, subject to tax & National Insurance)
    • Annual stipend: £18551.40 (2022/23 rate)

Application Process

  • How to Apply: The applicants are required to apply to their preferred course of study through the university’s online portal. After that, to be considered for this award.
  • Supporting Documents: Applicants must provide an essay of no more than 750 words maximum explaining (1) why you are applying for the scholarship, (2) why you are a suitable recipient of the scholarship, and (3) your expectations for the MRes + PhD in your chosen pathway.
  • A CV of no more than two pages
  • The official transcript or certified copy of university grades from all past degrees
  • Two academic reference letters (one must be from your most recent institution)

  • Admission Requirements: Students must have an undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline, with a final grade in the top 10% of their graduating class. Most incoming students also hold a Master’s degree.
  • Language Requirement: If relevant, valid, original Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), International English Language Testing System (IELTS), or Cambridge scores report (if required).
