Universität Hamburg 2023 Degree Completion Grants For International Students for Master Founded in 1919, Universität Hamburg (University of Hamburg) is a non-profit public higher education institution located in the urban setting of the large city of Hamburg (population range of 1,000,000-5,000,000 inhabitants). Officially accredited and/or recognized by the Behörde für Wissenschaft, Forschung und Gleichstellung, Hamburg (Authority for Science, Research and Equality, Hamburg), Universität Hamburg (UHH) is a very large (uniRank enrollment range: 35,000-39,999 students) coeducational higher education institution. Universität Hamburg (UHH) offers courses and programs leading to officially recognized higher education degrees such as pre-bachelor degrees (i.e. certificates, diplomas, associate or foundation degrees), bachelor degrees, master degrees, doctorate degrees in several areas of study. This 100 years old higher-education institution has a selective admission policy based on students' past academic record and grades. International students are welcome to apply for enrollment.

Eligibility Criteria

Persons entitled to funding are students who:

  • Are not German citizens;
  • Are not eligible for BAföG (federal student loan scheme);
  • Are preparing for or are in the final examination phase of their studies;
  • Have no financial support during this phase (proof required).

International students studying fee-based degree programs are eligible for this grant in exceptional cases, but they will not have priority in the selection procedure.

Students pursuing a DiplomMagister, or Staatsexamen degree may apply for a 12-month grant with their first application.

Those not entitled to funding:

  • International students who fulfill the requirements of Section 8 of the German federal training assistance act (Bundesgesetz über individuelle Förderung der Ausbildung, BAföG)
  • Doctoral candidates

Offered Benefits

  • As a rule, the funding period for degree completion grant is 6 months.
  • The maximum amount of funding is €720 per month. The amount of each grant is calculated according to the criteria stipulated in the German federal training assistance act (Bundesgesetz über individuelle Förderung der Ausbildung, BAföG).
  • If the final examination is not completed within the 6-month period, an extension may be requested.
  • The maximum funding period is 12 months.
