The University of Sydney is pleased to announce the United States Studies Centre PhD Scholarship for 2025. This prestigious research scholarship is designed to support exceptional students undertaking a PhD in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, with a research focus in American Studies, including American foreign policy, economic security, and American politics and culture.

To be eligible for the United States Studies Centre PhD Scholarship, applicants must have an unconditional offer of admission or be currently enrolled in a PhD program within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at the University of Sydney. They must hold a First-Class Honours degree or an equivalent qualification, such as a Master’s degree with a significant research component.

United States Studies Centre PhD Scholarship Established in 1850, The University of Sydney is a non-profit public higher education institution located in the urban setting of the large city of Sydney (population range of 1,000,000-5,000,000 inhabitants), New South Wales. Eligibility Criteria

  • Eligible Countries: All nationalities

  • Acceptable Course or Subjects: The scholarship will be awarded for a PhD in any field that aligns with American Studies, including American foreign policy, economic security, and American politics and culture.

  • Admissible Criteria: To be eligible, applicants must:

    • Have an unconditional offer of admission or be currently enrolled in a PhD program in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at the University of Sydney

    • Hold a First-Class Honours degree or equivalent, or a Master’s degree with a substantial research component

    • Undertake research in areas aligned with the mission and expertise of the United States Studies Centre

Offered Benefits

  • Annual living allowance of $41,753 (2025 RTP rate), indexed annually, for up to 14 research periods (approx. 3.5 years)

  • Up to $15,000 for travel expenses (capped at $5,000 per annum)

  • A one-time payment of up to $10,000 to support attendance at a research boot camp or training at an American university (subject to approval)

  • Part-time scholarship support available in special circumstances (e.g., medical or caregiving responsibilities).
