The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) is inviting candidates to apply for the HBCU Initiative Scholarship. The award is open for the academic session 2024/2025.

This exciting new program allows UMES to offer in-state tuition rates to out-of-state students who reside in a state or region without an HBCU (Historically Black College and University).The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) is a public historically black land-grant research university located in Princess Anne, Maryland. Established in 1886, UMES has a rich history that reflects its evolving role and mission. Initially founded as the Delaware Conference Academy, it has gone through various name changes, including Princess Anne Academy, before becoming Maryland State College in 1948 and finally the University of Maryland Eastern Shore in 1970.

UMES HBCU Initiative Scholarship in United States Established in 1886, University of Maryland Eastern Shore is a non-profit public higher education institution located in the suburban setting of the small town of Princess Anne (population range of 2,500-9,999 inhabitants), Maryland. Officially accredited and/or recognized by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) is a small (uniRank enrollment range: 4,000-4,999 students) coeducational higher education institution. University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) offers courses and programs leading to officially recognized higher education degrees such as bachelor degrees, master degrees, doctorate degrees in several areas of study. This 133 years old higher-education institution has a selective admission policy based on entrance examinations and students' past academic record and grades. The admission rate range is 40-50% making this US higher education organization a averagely selective institution. International applicants are eligible to apply for enrollment.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Eligible Countries: Students residing in states or regions without HBCUs
  • Acceptable Course or Subjects: Any undergraduate subject offered by UMES
  • Admissible Criteria: Prospective students beginning the Fall 2024 semester from eligible states or U.S. territories. Transfer students and first-time freshmen are eligible. Current UMES students do not qualify.

Successful applicants will benefit from reduced tuition fees, allowing them to access quality education at UMES without the financial burden associated with out-of-state tuition rates.

Application Process

To apply, applicants must take admission in an undegraduate degree at the university. Candidates may utilize one of three platforms: the Common App, the Common Black College App, or the UMES Standard Application. A completed application must be submitted along with a nonrefundable application fee of $35.00, official transcripts, and optionally standardized test scores, letters of recommendation, and a personal statement. Applications must be completed by the specified deadlines.
