The U.S. Consulate General in Lagos, in partnership with the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ), is pleased to announce the launch of the Adejumobi Adegbite Fellowship for Young Journalists. This prestigious one-year fellowship honors the legacy of the late Adejumobi Adegbite, a respected journalist and former U.S. Consulate Information Specialist, who made significant contributions to the field of journalism in Nigeria.

The Adejumobi Adegbite Fellowship is open to emerging Nigerian journalists with no more than five years of professional experience. Eligible applicants must be active media practitioners—whether full-time, part-time, freelance, or interns—permanently residing in Nigeria. The fellowship aims to support and empower 10 early-career Nigerian journalists with a strong interest in investigative, multimedia, and data-driven reporting.

The Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ) is a Nigerian nonprofit media organization committed to promoting transparency, accountability, and social justice through in-depth investigative reporting. Founded to expose corruption, abuse of power, and human rights violations, FIJ empowers journalists with the tools and support needed to uncover the truth and hold powerful institutions accountable.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Eligible Countries: Nigeria

  • Acceptable Course or Subjects: The fellowship will be awarded in the fields of investigative journalism, multimedia journalism, and data-driven reporting.

  • Admissible Criteria: To be eligible, the applicants must meet all the following criteria:

    • Be emerging Nigerian journalists with no more than five years of professional experience.

    • Be active working journalists (full-time, part-time, freelance, or interns) residing permanently in Nigeria.

    • Not be alumni or prior participants of any U.S. government exchange programs.

    • Submit two investigative stories published within the 24 months prior to the application deadline.

    • Note: Features, analyses, and op-eds are not accepted and will lead to disqualification.

    • Be available to participate in both the opening and closing sessions in Lagos, as well as two virtual sessions during the fellowship year.

  • Two investigative stories published in the last 24 months.

  • A personal statement (maximum 1,000 words) explaining your inspiration as a journalist and how this fellowship aligns with your career aspirations.

  • A current curriculum vitae (CV).
