The President’s Awards are intended to recognize the high academic achievements of students who have successfully been awarded major scholarships from the Tri-agency doctoral competitions.

Dalhousie University President``s Awards 2025 for PhD Founded in 1818, Dalhousie University is a non-profit public higher education institution located in the urban setting of the small city of Halifax (population range of 250,000-499,999 inhabitants), Nova Scotia. Officially accredited and/or recognized by the Department of Labour and Advanced Education, Nova Scotia, Dalhousie University is a large (uniRank enrollment range: 15,000-19,999 students) coeducational higher education institution. Dalhousie University offers courses and programs leading to officially recognized higher education degrees such as pre-bachelor degrees (i.e. certificates, diplomas, associate or foundation degrees), bachelor degrees, master degrees, doctorate degrees in several areas of study. This 201 years old higher-education institution has a selective admission policy based on students' past academic record and grades. The admission rate range is 60-70% making this Canadian higher education organization a somewhat selective institution. International students are welcome to apply for enrollment.

Eligibility Criteria

At the time of admission into their PhD, or within the first twelve months (three terms) of registration in their PhD. Eligible students will hold a full doctoral scholarship from one of these specified funding programs:

  • NSERC (PGSD, CGSD, Vanier CGS)
  • SSHRC (Doctoral, CGSD, Vanier CGS)
  • CIHR (Doctoral, CGSD, Vanier CGS)

Recipients will receive funding each term for up to six terms (two years), provided they are:

  • registered as a full-time student within the first four years of your program
  • paying full tuition (i.e., not continuing fees)
  • receiving a full doctoral scholarship from one of the specified agencies
  • tuition is not covered by any other award, agency or government*

Offered Benefits

$2,500 per term for up to six terms ($15,000)

Application Process

There is no need to apply. If you are meet the eligibility requirements listed above, you will be automatically considered for one of the President’s Awards.

If you have been selected for an award, the Faculty of Graduate Studies will notify you and your department following your admission.
