An Industrial PhD project is a three-year industrially focused PhD project where the student is hired by a company and enrolled at a university at the same time.

An Industrial PhD project is an industrially focused PhD education. The research project is conducted in cooperation between a private company, an Industrial PhD student and a university. Third parties from both the public and private sector can be attached.

The company

The Industrial PhD student is employed by a private company. The company applies for subsidy from the Danish Agency for Science, Technology and Innovation. The student is employed by the company and paid a salary during the entire Industrial PhD education. The student divides his or her working hours equally between the university and the company over the three-year course of the project.

The university

Universities and students of all nationalities may be accepted. If the education is conducted at a non-Danish university, a Danish university must be attached to the project as a third party.

The business course

A mandatory part of the Industrial PhD education is the special business course offered by the Danish Agency for Science, Technology and Innovation. The course concludes with a business report, which must be about the commercial aspects of the Industrial PhD project in a theoretical and company-relevant context. For Industrial PhD projects in the public sector, the business report must be about the institutional benefits of the project.

Legislation

The Industrial PhD Programme is authorised by the Act on Technology and Innovation. Other relevant legislation is the Executive order on PhD education, the Act on Employee Inventions and the Act on Inventions at Public Research Institutions.

Eligibility Criteria

The Industrial PhD candidate must:

  • have a project relevant education at a master’s degree level,

  • either have, for the master’s and bachelor’s degrees put together;

  • a weighted average of at least 8.2 on the Danish 7-step scale or 9 on the Danish 13 scale,

  • or for the master’s degree alone, if it has a nominal duration of at least 120 ECTS (two full-time equivalents);

  • a weighted average of at least 9.5 on the Danish 7-step scale or 9.4 on the Danish 13 scale.

  • have attained at least the grade 10 (Danish scale) for any final thesis/examination project.

  • It is possible to apply with a candidate whose final thesis has not yet been graded. If the candidate meets all other requirements, an approval is given on the condition that the candidate receives at least 10 for the thesis.

  • Non-graded applicants must submit a written statement or assessment of the final ex-amination project.

Offered Benefits

The salary of Industrial PhD students must as a minimum correspond to the current pay rate of the collective agreement for PhD fellows employed in the Danish state. The salary of PhD fellows employed in the state is determined by seniority, cf. the collective agreement for academics (‘akademikeroverenskomsten’) § 8.2. A new university graduate is placed at basic salary level 4, corresponding to an annual wage of DKK 346,000. At a seniority of 2 years, the graduate is placed at basic salary level 5, corresponding to an annual wage of DKK 372,000. At a seniority of 3 years, the graduate is placed at basic salary level 6, corresponding to an annual wage of DKK 395,000. At a seniority of 4 years the final salary level is attained, corresponding to an annual wage of DKK 418,000.
