Design Star wants to recruit doctoral researchers with outstanding academic or professional backgrounds and research potential to commence a programme of postgraduate study in the 2017/18 academic year, starting in September/October 2017.
The Design Star Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) brings together leading design departments at the
University of Brighton; Goldsmiths, University of London; Loughborough University; The Open University; and the University of Reading.
It aims to develop future intellectual leadership in design: research leaders of the future who are equipped to make a difference to contemporary social concerns, knowledge production and creative practices. This requires an approach to research training that places diversity and interdisciplinarity at its core.
Awards (stipend and fee waiver) are available for full-time and part-time study.

Eligibility Criteria
When you send your PhD proposal to the University you want to study with, you need to apply to Design Star for funding. You should not wait to see if your proposal has been accepted by the University that you are applying to.
Academic qualifications and experience
You must hold a first or a very good upper second class undergraduate degree in a relevant subject, and hold or be completing a Master’s degree, or have relevant professional experience.
Citizenship
You must be a United Kingdom citizen to hold a full AHRC Design Star studentship. EU applicants who have not been resident in the UK for the three years prior to the start of their studentship are only eligible for a fees-only award; however, Design Star aims to offer EU applicants selected for awards full or part maintenance grants from our own institutional funds. We are governed by the Research Councils UK’s Conditions of Research Council Training Grants. Its residency requirements are:
To be eligible for a full award a student must have:
Settled status in the UK, meaning they have no restrictions on how long they can stay and Been ‘ordinarily resident’ in the UK for 3 years prior to the start of the studentship. This means they must have been normally residing in the UK (apart from temporary or occasional absences) and Not been residing in the UK wholly or mainly for the purpose of full-time education. (This does not apply to UK or EU nationals).
To be eligible for a fees only award:
Students from EU countries other than the UK are generally eligible for a fees-only award. To be eligible for a fees-only award, a student must be ordinarily resident in a member state of the EU, in the same way as UK students must be ordinarily resident in the UK. Note: These eligibility criteria are based on the Education (Fees and Awards) (England) Regulations 2007 and subsequent amendments.

We provide our award-holders with a comprehensive and attractive package of financial support over the duration of their studies:
A tax-free maintenance grant set at the UK Research Council’s national postgraduate rate Full payment of tuition fees during your period of supervised study Financial support to attend our cohort-building events Financial support to incorporate short-term placements, international study visits and specialist training events in order to develop your skills (if possible please highlight potential needs in your initial application).
Part-time award-holders receive a maintenance grant at levels that are pro-rata to their time commitment, which is usually 50%.
