To be eligible for the SUIPRES scholarship, applicants must be international students applying for an eligible PhD or Professional Doctorate program at Swansea University. They should have, or expect to achieve, a first-class or upper second-class UK undergraduate degree (or international equivalent), and/or a Distinction in a relevant master’s degree.

Swansea University International Postgraduate Research Excellence Scholarships, UK for PhD Established in 1920, Swansea University is a non-profit public higher education institution located in the suburban setting of the large town of Swansea (population range of 50,000-249,999 inhabitants), Wales. Officially accredited and/or recognized by the Privy Council, Swansea University is a large (uniRank enrollment range: 15,000-19,999 students) coeducational higher education institution. Swansea University offers courses and programs leading to officially recognized higher education degrees such as pre-bachelor degrees (i.e. certificates, diplomas, associate or foundation degrees), bachelor degrees, master degrees, doctorate degrees in several areas of study. This 99 years old higher-education institution has a selective admission policy based on entrance examinations and students' past academic record and grades. International applicants are eligible to apply for enrollment.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Eligible Countries: International (students eligible to pay international fees)

  • Acceptable Course or Subjects: The scholarship will be awarded for PhD or Professional Doctorate programs offered by Swansea University. View eligible courses

  • Admissible Criteria: To be eligible, applicants must:

    • Apply for an eligible PhD or Professional Doctorate programme at Swansea University.

    • Hold (or be expected to achieve) a UK 1st class or 2:1 undergraduate degree or an equivalent international qualification, and/or a Distinction in a UK master’s degree (or equivalent).

    • Be classified as an international student liable for international tuition fees.

    • Demonstrate excellence beyond academic qualifications in their application (e.g., awards, outreach, teaching, etc.).

    • Not be a current or returning PhD/Professional Doctorate student.

    • Not be applying for a master’s level course.

    • Not be fully sponsored by a third party.

Offered Benefits

  • Covers the difference between international and UK tuition fees for the duration of the PhD/Professional Doctorate.

  • Awardees will pay tuition fees at the UK home student rate, currently £4,786 for 2024/25 (subject to annual increase in line with UKRI guidelines).

  • Scholarship value is directly offset against tuition fees.

  • Students must confirm they have sufficient funds to cover the remaining tuition and living costs.

Application Process

  1. Apply for an eligible PhD or Professional Doctorate program at Swansea University.

  2. Indicate your interest in the SUIPRES scholarship in your application.

  3. Provide a strong supporting statement highlighting your academic achievements and relevant extracurricular activities (awards, teaching, outreach, etc.).

  4. Your scholarship outcome will be communicated via your offer letter.

Application Deadlines Based on Enrolment:

  • April 2025 Enrolment: Apply by 15 January 2025

  • July 2025 Enrolment: Apply by 15 April 2025

  • October 2025 Enrolment: Apply by 15 July 2025
