Swansea University, in partnership with the National Archives is offering Fully Funded PhD Studentship in Early Education Starting in October 2025. This unique opportunity allows students to examine how childcare shaped and was shaped by political priorities such as poverty, family, gender, and social mobility.

To be eligible, applicants must hold a 2:1 undergraduate degree and a master’s degree with at least a Merit, or a First Class Honours bachelor’s degree. They must demonstrate interest in the history of education, childcare, or related fields, and meet English language requirements (IELTS 6.5 overall, with no component below 6.5 or equivalent). The opportunity is open to both UK and international applicants.

Swansea University Fully Funded PhD Studentship in Early Education, UK Established in 1920, Swansea University is a non-profit public higher education institution located in the suburban setting of the large town of Swansea (population range of 50,000-249,999 inhabitants), Wales. Officially accredited and/or recognized by the Privy Council, Swansea University is a large (uniRank enrollment range: 15,000-19,999 students) coeducational higher education institution. Swansea University offers courses and programs leading to officially recognized higher education degrees such as pre-bachelor degrees (i.e. certificates, diplomas, associate or foundation degrees), bachelor degrees, master degrees, doctorate degrees in several areas of study. Eligibility Criteria

  • Eligible Countries: All nationalities

  • Acceptable Course or Subjects: The scholarship will be awarded in History (PhD), specifically focusing on early years education and childcare in modern Britain.

  • Admissible Criteria:

    • A 2:1 undergraduate degree and a Master’s with at least a ‘Merit’, or a First Class Honours Bachelor’s degree (or international equivalent)

    • English proficiency (IELTS 6.5 overall, with no component below 6.5 or equivalent)

    • Interest in archives, policy, education, or social history

    • Willingness to conduct research at both Swansea University and The National Archives (onsite and online)

    • A commitment to contribute to the wider CDP research community and undertake a work placement.
