Sport and Exercise Science: Fully Funded KESS II MSc by Research Scholarship: AYP-Abertawe Project: Enhancing the Health and Well-Being of Active Young People Across Swansea
Start date: October 2019
This scholarships is part funded by the Welsh Government’s European Social Fund (ESF) convergence programme for West Wales and the Valleys.
The AYP-Abertawe project aims to integrate currently used data capture methods to inform Swansea Council’s strategic priorities for Health, Well-being and Physical Activity.
Phase 1 will integrate currently separate data collection methods, namely, health and fitness (Fitness Fun-day), well-being, lifestyle and behaviour (CHAT), physical education and sport participation (School Sport Survey). This phase will offer Swansea Council with evidence on: i) geographical trends; and, ii) gender trends across the Borough. Phase 2 will evaluate the effectiveness of the follow-up activity sessions led by the AYP department in primary schools across Swansea. This will be achieved through qualitative observations, interviews with teachers and Gower College students and focus groups with children. This phase will see partners collaborate and co-produce to improve children’s health, well-being and physical literacy.
Scholarships are collaborative awards with external partners including SMEs and micro companies, as well as public and third sector organisations. The scholarship provides 1 year funding with a 3 month period to complete the thesis. The achievement of a postgraduate skills development award, PSDA, is compulsory for each KESS II scholar and is based on a 30 credit award.
