The University of Wisconsin–Madison is inviting candidates to apply for Sophomore Research Fellowships. The scholarship is designed for the academic session 2024/2025.

To be eligible, applicants must be undergraduate students at UW–Madison, either in their second year, first-year students with over 24 credits by May 2025, or transfer students in their first year at the university. They should maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.3 or higher and be in good academic and disciplinary standing.The University of Wisconsin–Madison, established in 1848, is a prominent public land-grant research university located in Madison, Wisconsin. As the flagship institution of the University of Wisconsin System, it serves over 35,000 undergraduate students across a diverse array of programs, including 136 undergraduate majors and numerous graduate degrees.

  • Eligible Countries: All
  • Acceptable Course or Subjects: The scholarship is available to undergraduate students in any field offered at UW–Madison.
  • Admissible Criteria: To be eligible, applicants must:
    • Be a second-year undergraduate, a first-year student with over 24 credits after May 2025, or a transfer student in their first year at UW–Madison
    • Have a cumulative GPA of 2.3 or higher
    • Be in good academic and disciplinary standing
    • Comply with fellowship conditions (e.g., not accepting other research funding for the same project)

Offered Benefits

  • $2,500 award to support the student’s independent research project
  • $500 to faculty/staff advisor for research-related costs
  • Opportunity to present research at the Undergraduate Symposium or a similar venue

Application Process

Students must apply Log on to  Wisconsin Scholarship Hub (WiSH) . After logging-in and filling out a general application, you will be presented with links to applications for scholarships for which you are eligible, with open application cycles. Applications should include a 3–5-page project proposal, an unofficial UW–Madison transcript, and a recommendation letter from the project advisor. Selection is based on the quality of the research proposal, collaboration with the faculty mentor, and project feasibility within the timeline.
