To be eligible for the grants, applicants must have earned their PhD between 2 and 8 years before the call deadline and have at least 2 years of research experience. They must also have a connection to Switzerland, such as Swiss nationality, a degree earned in Switzerland, or prior research experience in the country.

SNSF Starting Grants in Switzerland for Fellowship Founded in 1996, Università della Svizzera Italiana (University of Italian-speaking Switzerland) is a non-profit public higher education institution located in the urban setting of the large town of Lugano (population range of 50,000-249,999 inhabitants), Ticino. This institution has also branch campuses in the following location(s): Mendrisio, Bellinzona. Officially accredited and/or recognized by the Staatssekretariat für Bildung, Forschung und Innovation, Schweiz (State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation, Switzerland), Università della Svizzera Italiana (USI) is a small (uniRank enrollment range: 2,000-2,999 students) coeducational higher education institution. Università della Svizzera Italiana (USI) offers courses and programs leading to officially recognized higher education degrees such as bachelor degrees, master degrees, doctorate degrees in several areas of study. Eligibility Criteria

  • Eligible Countries: Applicants from all nationalities with a connection to Switzerland are eligible.
  • Acceptable Course or Subjects: The grant can be applied to any research field supported by SNSF.
  • Admissible Criteria: To be eligible, applicants must meet all the following criteria:
  • Must have defended their PhD thesis between 2 and 8 years prior to the call deadline.

  • Must have at least 2 years of research experience.

  • Must have a link to Switzerland, such as:

    • Having completed a PhD or Master’s degree in Switzerland, or

    • Having conducted research in Switzerland, or

    • Holding Swiss nationality.

  • Applicants must not already hold a research-leading position as a group leader or university professor, nor have received significant third-party funding.

Offered Benefits

  • Up to CHF 1 million for project-related costs.

  • PI’s salary covered (if not already funded).

  • Funding duration: Up to 5 years.

  • Budget includes support for:

    • Personnel costs

    • Equipment and materials

    • Travel and conference expenses

    • Open research data costs

Application Process

To obtain the institutional support letter requested by the SNSF, internal and external applicants must send their dossier (CV incl. publication list, cover letter and support letter by USI professor) for the internal assessment. Priority will be given to external candidates.

  • Support letter from USI professor(s) supporting their application.

applicants without a professorship must send their dossier (CV incl. publication list, cover letter and support letter by USI professor(s) for the internal assessment by 7 January 2026. The internal procedure consists of an evaluation of the dossier and an interview with the dean and the institute director, as well as with members of the faculty and the rectorate. Priority will be given to external candidates.
