The University of Birmingham is pleased to announce applications for the Sir Henry Thomas Scholarship, supporting PhD research in fields related to Hispanic Studies. The scholarship funds home tuition and provides an annual stipend to help scholars focus on impactful research.

Eligible applicants must hold a strong academic background, including a first-class or upper second-class undergraduate degree and a relevant Master’s qualification. The scholarship is open to new doctoral candidates and current internal Year 1 PhD students whose proposed research aligns with Spanish, Portuguese, Catalan, or Latin American Studies and is supervised by a qualified faculty member in the department.

Sir Henry Thomas Scholarships in United Kingdom for Master Founded in 1900, University of Birmingham is a non-profit public higher education institution located in the urban setting of the large city of Birmingham (population range of 1,000,000-5,000,000 inhabitants), West Midlands. Eligibility Criteria

  • Eligible Countries: Open to applicants from any country; both Home and International students may apply.
  • Acceptable Course or Subjects: The scholarship will be awarded for doctoral study in areas related to Spanish, Portuguese, Catalan, or Latin American Studies, including but not limited to:
  • Film, Media, and Video Studies

  • Cultural and Literary Studies (20th–21st century Spain, Catalan-speaking regions)

  • World Literature (Latin America, Portuguese-speaking world)

  • Cultural History and Visual & Material Cultures

  • Exile, Migration, Censorship, Postcolonial and Decolonial Studies

  • Medieval Iberian History, Manuscript Culture, Digital Textual Editing

  • Early Modern Spain – Literature, Theatre, Visual Culture, Military & Maritime Life

  • Translation, Cross-Cultural Adaptation, Linguistics, Comparative Morphosyntax, Judeo-Spanish/Ladino

  • Admissible Criteria: To be eligible, applicants must:
    • Hold (or expect to hold) a first-class or upper second-class undergraduate degree in a relevant subject.
    • Have completed or be completing a Master’s degree in a relevant field for doctoral-level entry.
    • Be a new doctoral applicant OR a current internal Year 1 PhD student at the University of Birmingham.
    • Propose a research project supervised by a staff member in the Spanish, Catalan, or Portuguese areas of the Department.
    • Demonstrate academic excellence and potential for outstanding research contributions.

• Coverage of Home tuition fees for three years.
• A £15,000 annual stipend for three years (subject to satisfactory progress).
• For international students: the Home fee amount will serve as a partial contribution toward overseas fees.

Application Process

Applicants must complete one application process for all College of Arts and Law doctoral scholarships:

  1. Apply for admission to the relevant PhD programme at the University of Birmingham.

  2. Complete the scholarship application form via the “ Apply Now” link, selecting the Sir Henry Thomas Scholarship among the options.

  3. Submit all required documents by the deadline: 27 February 2026.
