To establish a broader range of initiatives and engagements to strengthen further collaboration and cooperation with the Government of Namibia across a range of mutual interests, the Irish Government has organized the Sean McBride Fellowships for the academic year 2022-2023.

Sean McBride was a former Minister for External Relations in Ireland and also served as the UN High Commissioner for Namibia during an important period in Namibia’s history pre-independence. Therefore, to hour his contributions, this fellowship was established. The students of Namibia who undertake an eligible master’s programme at a partner university will be considered. Winning scholars will be provided accommodation, tuition fees and living costs.

The Ireland Fellows Programme allows students to undertake a fully-funded one-year master’s level programme at a higher education institution (HEI) in Ireland. Sean McBride Fellowships for Namibia Students in Ireland Established in 1951, National College of Ireland is a non-profit public higher education institution located in the urban setting of the medium-sized city of Dublin (population range of 500,000-1,000,000 inhabitants), County Dublin. This institution has also branch campuses in the following location(s): 40 locations nationwide. Officially accredited and/or recognized by the Department of Education and Skills, Ireland, National College of Ireland (NCI) is a small (uniRank enrollment range: 5,000-5,999 students) coeducational higher education institution.   • Eligible Countries: Namibia.
  • Eligible Course or Subjects: Students can apply for a fellowship programme from the Directory of Eligible Programmes offered at Atlantic Technological University, DBS Dublin Business School Dublin, Dublin City University Dublin, Griffith College, Mary Immaculate College Limerick, Munster Technological University Cork/Kerry, Maynooth University near Dublin, National College of Art and Design Dublin, National College of Ireland Dublin, National University of Ireland, Royal College of the Surgeons University of Medicine and Health Sciences Dublin, St. Angela’s College Sligo, South East Technological University, Trinity College Dublin, Technological University, Technological University of the Shannon, University College Cork Cork, UCD Michael Smurfit Business School, or the University of Limerick.
  • Eligibility Criteria: To be eligible, the applicants must meet all the following/given criteria:
  • The applicants must be a resident national of Namibia.
  • The applicants must be working with the Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation in Namibia.
  • The applicants must not already qualify for a master’s level or higher. Not currently undertaking a programme at master’s level or higher, or be due to start a programme at master’s level or higher in the academic year 2022/23.
  • The applicants must apply to commence a new programme at the master’s level in Ireland no sooner than August 2023.
  • The applicants must demonstrate the following: leadership abilities and aspirations; a commitment to the achievement of the SDGs within your own country; and a commitment to contribute to building positive relationships with Ireland.
  • The applicants must have identified and selected three programmes relevant to their academic and professional background from the Directory of Eligible programme.
  • The applicants must have a clear understanding of the academic and English language proficiencies required for all programmes chosen.
  • The applicants must not have applied to the Ireland Fellows Programme on more than one previous occasion.

Offered Benefits

The applicants that will be selected to be awarded this fellowship will be provided programme fees, flights, accommodation and living costs incurred while conducting their study at an eligible Irish university.

Application Process

  • How to Apply: The students must first apply for admission to an Irish university of their choice. Fellowship application form must be completed and submitted separately
  • Supporting Documents: The students are required to present the following documents to the university:
  • Passport
  • Undergraduate degree award certificate
  • Final degree transcripts
  • Passport size photo
  • Letters of academic references
  • Current CV
  • Admission Requirements: The applicants must hold a bachelor’s level academic qualification from an accredited and government-recognized higher education institution, with a minimum grade point average of 3.0 (4.0 scale) – i.e. a first-class honour, or second-class honour, Grade 1 and have a minimum of two years’ substantial work experience that is directly relevant to their proposed programme(s) of study, depending on the country.
  • Language Requirement: The students must submit scores of the following English language proficiency tests:
