S.C. Higher Education Tuition Grants Commission is managing the South Carolina Need-based Grant Program for students appearing an independent college or university.

The purpose of S.C. Need-based grant is to provide extra financial aid to South Carolina’s students who need a study fund to support their college education.

The grant is open to South Carolina residents who are going to attend their first baccalaureate degree or first associate’s degree at an eligible S.C. public institution.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Eligible Countries: Only the United States
  • Acceptable Course or Subjects: The grant will be awarded for undergraduate study in any subject
  • Admissible Criteria: Students must be enrolled in a degree-seeking program in their first one-year program, first associate’s degree, first two-year program leading to a baccalaureate degree, first baccalaureate degree, or first pre-professional undergraduate degree, to include those pre-professional degree programs that may not require a baccalaureate degree at an eligible S.C. public institution.

Offered Benefits

  • If students enrolled full-time, then they may get up to $2,500 annually or if they registered part-time as a degree-seeking student at an eligible S.C. public institution, they would get up to $1,250 annually.
  • The money of the grant is divided into two semesters out of the academic year (i.e. fall, spring, or summer). The award should be applied directly for the cost-of-attendance.

Application Process

To apply: Students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Applicants are required to take admission in one of the South Carolina Eligible Public Institutions to achieve S.C. Need-based Grant Program.
