Applications are now open for the NIAS Safe Haven Fellowship, offering a 5-month residency in Amsterdam for scholars, writers, artists, and journalists at risk due to conflict or war. The fellowship provides a €3,500 monthly stipend, subsidized accommodation, travel reimbursement, and access to research facilities.

To be eligible for the NIAS Safe Haven Fellowship, applicants must be scholars, writers, artists, or journalists at risk due to conflict or war. Academic applicants should have at least three years of research experience after earning their PhD, while this is not mandatory for artistic or journalistic proposals. Applicants must have a strong command of English and propose a project within the humanities or social sciences. They must not be affiliated with institutions boycotted by the Dutch government.

The Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities and Social Sciences (NIAS) is an interdisciplinary research institute of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW). Located in Amsterdam, NIAS provides a collaborative and intellectually stimulating environment where scholars, artists, journalists, and writers from around the world come together to pursue advanced research projects.

    • A description of circumstances that compelled the applicant to leave their previous workplace

  • Applications are assessed based on project quality, feasibility, relevance, methodology, and the applicant’s potential contribution to the NIAS community
