Carol Young diligently worked at the Richmond Chamber of Commerce for 25 years, from 1991- 2016. Carol began her career at the Chamber running the front desk and ended her tenure at the top, as the Executive Director of the organization. In between those two roles, Carol liked to joke that she did every job possible... with the exception of book keeping. Carol Young is a testament to success through hard work and perseverance. During her time at the Chamber,  she overcame adversity, but nonetheless grew as a leader. This $2,500 scholarship is intended to recognize students who exemplify the traits which Carol lives by and to assist them in beginning their post-secondary journey, be it academic studies or the trades.  The Carol Young Scholarship will be awarded to students who have overcome significant adversity in their lives. In spite of the challenges they have faced, they will have demonstrated improvement through their work ethic and have inspired fellow students.

Eligibility Criteria

Richmond, BC residents who are graduating students of Richmond's School District 38 are eligible for this award. Applying students should plan to enroll in post-secondary studies (academic or trades) by December 31, 2019.

Offered Benefits

The selected recipient(s) will receive $2,500 toward their education, courtesy of the Richmond Chamber of Commerce.

Application Process

Nomination must be in the form of a 2-3 minute video. All videos are to be done in a ‘selfie’ style, and we ask that it is not edited or re-mastered in any form. Applicants will not be judged on the production quality of their videos but solely the content. We also ask that the student provides two letters of reference. The video must: • Be submitted in mp4, avi, mpeg or wmv format• Not exceed 3 minutes in length, nor exceed 20mb in size• Avoid music or editing extras• Be accompanied with the Information / Media Release Form, included in this package This video should answer the questions: What adversity have you encountered? How has it impacted you and how have you worked to overcome it? How do you inspire others now or hope to inspire them in the future? This video can also touch on their academic improvement that has occurred throughout high school. This student may not have the highest grades but through their hard work and perseverance, has made large strides in advancing their academic learning.The video can also include mention of: • Work experience• Community involvement• Recreational activities• Future aspirations
