Postgraduate Merit Awards Part-Time at University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa Founded in 1922, University of the Witwatersrand is a non-profit public higher education institution located in the urban setting of the large city of Johannesburg (population range of 1,000,000-5,000,000 inhabitants), Gauteng. Officially accredited and/or recognized by the Department of Higher Education and Training, South Africa, University of the Witwatersrand (WITS) is a large (uniRank enrollment range: 25,000-29,999 students) coeducational higher education institution. University of the Witwatersrand (WITS) offers courses and programs leading to officially recognized higher education degrees such as bachelor degrees, master degrees, doctorate degrees in several areas of study. This 97 years old higher-education institution has a selective admission policy based on entrance examinations and students' past academic record and grades. The admission rate range is 30-40% making this South African higher education organization a very selective institution. International students are welcome to apply for enrollment.

Eligibility Criteria

Eligible Countries: Domestic students are eligible to apply.
Acceptable Course or Subjects: The sponsorship will be awarded to study in an Honours, Masters or PhD degree offered by the university.
Admissible Criteria: Students are eligible to apply for this study grant.

  • A student applying for a Master’s degree will receive a Postgraduate Merit Award if he/she receives an average mark of 70% or above for their Honors degree.
  • For students applying for an Honours degree the selection criteria for the granting of the Postgraduate Merit Award are:
    • Only the two most recent years of study will be considered
    • A student must obtain a minimum mark of 65% and above
    • The mark is calculated using a weighted average which takes into account course length and credits as well as faculty differences.
  • A student applying for a PhD degree will receive a Postgraduate Merit Award if:
    • The Master’s degree was completed within two years full-time or three years part-time.

Benefit: The university will provide tuition fees to a maximum of R45 000 will be awarded to students who qualify.
