Leiden University’s Faculty of Humanities is excited to announce a Postdoctoral Researcher Position in Arabic Studies and Epigraphy. This full-time position is part of the VICI research project “Land, Space, Power: Landscapes of the Early Caliphate,” funded by the Dutch Science Foundation. The selected candidate will conduct pioneering research into the cultural transformations of the early Arab-Islamic empire.

To be eligible for the position at Leiden University, applicants must possess a PhD degree in a relevant field and demonstrate excellent reading skills in medieval Arabic. Eligibility Criteria

  • Eligible Countries: All countries
  • Acceptable Course or Subjects: The scholarship will be awarded in any subject offered by the Faculty of Humanities, with a focus on Arabic Studies and epigraphy.
  • Admissible Criteria: To be eligible, applicants must meet all of the following criteria:
    • Hold a PhD degree in a related field.
    • Have excellent (medieval) Arabic reading skills.
    • Possess experience in working with and analyzing inscriptions.
    • Demonstrate an excellent command of the English language.
    • Show a commitment to developing original research and working collaboratively in a team.
    • Be willing to embrace new research methodologies, including working with Geographical Information Systems (GIS).

Offered Benefits

The successful candidate will receive a full-time, fixed-term contract from 1 March 2025 until 31 December 2027, with a starting salary of €4,492 gross per month. Additional benefits include 8% holiday pay and an 8.3% year-end bonus. Moreover, applicants from outside the Netherlands may be eligible for a substantial tax break.
