Pirbright Institute for Phd

The Pirbright Institute is an international centre for research on infectious diseases of farm animals. Training is an important aspect of our mission and each year we offer a number of studentships in our laboratories.

Studentships currently available can be found here.

Students at the Institute benefit from being part of a world-leading research organisation by being supervised by internationally recognised experts in the field and from access to excellent research facilities, training, seminars, academic journals, etc.

Students are registered with prestigious universities for the award of their degrees.

On-site accommodation is available at a reasonable rent and is guaranteed for first year students.

The Institute also offers recreational facilities and a subsidised restaurant.

We regret that the Institute does not offer work experience placements to people under the age of 18 years. This is due to the restrictions of working in a high biosecurity environment.

English Language Requirements

For those whose first language is not English, applicants for studentships at the Pirbright Institute will need to show valid proof of English proficiency. This is essential to ensure safety in the laboratory and also to meet entry conditions for the University at which the PhD is registered. The IELTS is the preferred qualification although equivalent qualifications will also be considered, and dispensation may be made if you don't have one of these formal qualifications but are currently being taught in English. The Institute requires an average IELTS score of 7.0, with no lower than 7.0 in the listening and reading sections and no lower than 6.5 in the speaking and writing sections. However, please note that some of our registering Universities (including Oxford, Cambridge and London) will have slightly higher requirements. The Institute retains the right to ask applicants to take an additional English test if deemed necessary.

If you have any questions about English language requirements or qualifications, please address them to the Head of Postgraduate Studies at studentship.iah@pirbright.ac.uk
