PhD Studentships in Upgrading the CMS Hardware Trigger, UK


Brunel University London, in partnership with CERN and the University of Bristol is inviting applicants for a fully funded STFC PhD studentship. The project focuses on upgrading the CMS hardware trigger at the High-Luminosity LHC to enhance top quark detection and search for new physics.

Applicants must be UK or Irish nationals, or hold settled/pre-settled status or indefinite leave to remain/enter in the UK. A first or upper second-class honours degree (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline is required. English language proficiency (IELTS 6.5 overall with 6.0 in each section) must be demonstrated if applicable.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Eligible Countries: UK and Irish nationals

  • Acceptable Course or Subjects: The scholarship will be awarded for research in experimental particle physics, focusing on CMS trigger upgrades and top quark physics.

  • Admissible Criteria: To be eligible, applicants must:

    • Be a UK national, Irish national, or hold settled/pre-settled status, or indefinite leave to remain/enter in the UK.

    • Hold a first or upper second-class honours degree (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline.

    • Demonstrate English language proficiency (IELTS 6.5 overall with 6.0 in each component) if applicable.

    • Submit all required documents: up-to-date CV, personal statement (300–500 words), degree certificates and transcripts, evidence of English language (if appropriate), and contact details of two referees (one academic).
