The University of Nairobi (UoN), in collaboration with the University of Copenhagen (UCPH) and the Danish Institute for International Studies (DIIS), is pleased to announce the call for applications for three fully funded PhD scholarships under the project titled “Governing Nature Based Solutions: The prospects for a just green transition in Kenya” (JUCAN – Justice, Carbon, Nature).

Eligible candidates for the 3 PhD scholarships in the Governing Nature-Based Solutions Research Project must be Kenyan nationals possessing a documented master’s degree in fields such as Development Studies, Geography and Environmental Studies, Economics, Conservation Science, or related disciplines.   • Eligible Countries: Kenyan nationals
  • Acceptable Course or Subjects: Development Studies, Geography and Environmental Studies, Environmental governance, Natural Resource Management, Political Science, Political Ecology, Sociology, Economics, Conservation Science, Anthropology, or related studies
  • Admissible Criteria: Candidates must hold a documented master’s degree in the relevant field with proven research knowledge and skills/interest in qualitative or quantitative research methods. Full-time commitment to the PhD study and flexibility in collaborating with the JUCAN research team are required. Female applicants are strongly encouraged to apply.

Offered Benefits

Successful candidates will receive fully funded scholarships covering expenses for equipment, fieldwork, participation in courses and conferences, monthly allowances, and two three-month stays in Denmark. Enrolled PhD scholars will work closely with supervisors from UoN and UCPH or DIIS, with an option for obtaining a double degree. The scholarships are for three years, commencing in September 2024. Shortlisted applicants will undergo an academic assessment, followed by an oral interview and a written aptitude test.

  • Certified copies of Bachelor and Master degree transcripts
  • Certified English translation of transcripts (if applicable)
  • Official explanation of grading system (if qualifications obtained from outside Kenyan Universities)
  • Two recommendation letters from academic referees
  • A maximum of two-page doctoral study concept relevant to the research project, including proposed title, background, problem statement, objectives, and indicative methodology related to one of the research questions (R1-4).
