Aarhus University, in collaboration with the Independent Research Fund Denmark and the University of Southern Denmark, is offering a PhD Scholarship in AI-based Analysis of Scandinavianist Propaganda and Public Perceptions during the Crimean War (1853–1856). The position is available in either the 4+4 or 5+3 PhD track, starting in February or March 2026.

To be eligible, applicants must have an academic background in History, ideally combined with Political Science, and qualify for either the 4+4 or 5+3 PhD track depending on their completed ECTS credits. Strong skills in programming (Python), natural language processing, and digital humanities are required, along with experience in conceptual and intellectual history. Excellent proficiency in academic English is also essential.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Eligible Countries: Open to all nationalities

  • Acceptable Course or Subjects: PhD programme in History, Archaeology, and Classical Studies at Aarhus University

  • Admissible Criteria: To be eligible, applicants must:

    • Hold a Master’s degree in History, preferably combined with Political Science (for 5+3) OR hold a Bachelor’s degree plus at least 60 ECTS of a Master’s degree (for 4+4).

    • Have proven experience in programming (Python), NLP techniques, and relevant digital humanities methodologies.

    • Demonstrate strong background in conceptual/intellectual history, especially political currents.

    • Document excellent communication skills in English (minimum TOEFL 83 or IELTS 6.5 or equivalent).

    • Meet the required ECTS completion deadlines depending on chosen scheme (60–90 ECTS for 4+4 or full 120 ECTS Master’s for 5+3).
