The University of Bergen is offering a PhD Scholar Position in Borehole Geophysics within the DigiWells research center. The project focuses on developing advanced methods for real-time modeling and inversion of geophysical well logs, with opportunities to collaborate with international partners and leading industry companies.

To be eligible for this PhD position at the University of Bergen, applicants must hold a master’s degree (or equivalent) in geophysics, applied mathematics, computational physics, or a closely related field, with strong skills in numerical methods and programming (Python and/or Matlab). Experience in inversion techniques, optimization, or machine learning is required, while knowledge of Maxwell’s equations, rock physics, or Bayesian methods is an advantage.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Eligible Countries: All nationalities

  • Acceptable Course or Subjects: The scholarship will be awarded in Borehole Geophysics / Geosciences / Applied Mathematics / Computational Physics or related areas offered by UiB.

  • Admissible Criteria: To be eligible, applicants must meet the following requirements:

    • Hold a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in geophysics, applied mathematics, theoretical/computational physics, or a closely related field.

    • Master’s students may apply if they expect to complete their degree before 01.10.2025.

    • Strong background in numerical methods for solving PDEs (e.g., diffusion or wave equations).

    • Skills in at least one of the following: numerical inversion methods, optimization, or machine learning.

    • Proficiency in Python and/or Matlab programming (documentation such as GitHub portfolio is encouraged).

    • Knowledge of Maxwell’s equations, rock physics models, Bayesian inversion, or machine learning in geophysics is an advantage.

    • Strong communication skills in written and spoken English.

    • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in an interdisciplinary environment.
