PhD Position in (Multi-Disciplinary) Legal Research in the Field of Migration, Belgium Established in 1970, Vrije Universiteit Brussel (Free University of Brussels) is a non-profit private higher education institution located in the urban setting of the large city of Brussels (population range of 1,000,000-5,000,000 inhabitants). Eligibility Criteria

  • Eligible Countries: Open to all nationalities
  • Acceptable Course or Subjects: The scholarship will be awarded in any subject offered by the university, focusing on legal research in the field of migration.
  • Admissible Criteria: To be eligible, applicants must meet the following criteria:
  • Hold a Master’s degree in law, with some training in political and legal philosophy advised.
  • Demonstrate solid legal knowledge and excellent academic performance.
  • Possess a thorough understanding of relevant academic literature.
  • Display flexibility, self-motivation, and perseverance.
  • Fluent in English, with proficiency in other languages considered advantageous.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, with experience in relevant software such as SPSS, Nvivo, Stata, and R preferred.
  • Open-minded, creative, and enthusiastic about interdisciplinary research approaches.
  • Must not have performed works exceeding a total period of 12 months as an assistant paid from operating resources.

Application Process

Interested candidates should apply via jobs.vub.be by the deadline of 15/05/2024. Required documents include:

  1. CV detailing academic qualifications, research experience, and publications.
  2. A one-page motivation letter.
  3. A 2000-word research proposal including the state of the art, relevance of the research topic, methodological outline combining legal research methodology with empirical methodologies, data sources, and research organization.
  4. A copy of a publication (master thesis, academic report, or article).
  5. Contact details (email and phone) of two referees.
  6. Diploma (not applicable for VUB alumni).

Short-listed candidates will be informed in early June, with interviews expected to take place thereafter. The successful candidate can start as of 1 October or as soon as possible thereafter.
