The Niels Bohr Institute, Faculty of Science at the University of Copenhagen, invites applications for a  PhD Position in Ion Optics and Trapping under the Novo Nordisk Foundation Quantum Computing Programme (NQCP). This interdisciplinary project focuses on developing advanced laser-based fabrication tools for next-generation quantum devices, combining expertise in nanofabrication, optics, and quantum technologies.

Applicants must hold a degree equivalent to a Danish Master’s in Physics or a closely related field for the 3-year PhD programme, or a Bachelor’s degree for the integrated MSc and PhD programme. Candidates should have experience with optics and laser systems, atomic or ion-trap physics, and preferably simulation tools like COMSOL.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Eligible Countries: Applicants from all countries are welcome to apply.
  • Acceptable Course or Subjects: The scholarship will be awarded for the PhD in Laser Enhanced Fabrication of Quantum Devices within the field of Physics, Quantum Optics, and Nanofabrication offered by the University of Copenhagen.
  • Admissible Criteria: To be eligible, applicants must meet the following criteria:
  • Hold a degree equivalent to a Danish Master’s degree (for the 3-year PhD programme) or a Bachelor’s degree (for the 3+5 integrated MSc and PhD programme).

  • Background in Physics, Quantum Optics, Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics, or related disciplines.

  • Experience in optics and laser systems, atomic physics, spectroscopy, ion optics, and trapping.

  • Familiarity with building UHV systems and simulation tools such as COMSOL.

  • Proficiency in a programming language (Python, MATLAB, or C++).

  • Strong communication skills in written and spoken English.
