The Institute for European Studies of the Jagiellonian University in Krakow invites applications for a PhD fellowship on ‘legitimacy crisis and identity politics’ as part of the PhD network ‘The Post-Crisis Legitimacy of the European Union’ (PLATO).
Although there are many ways of identifying with a political system, some sense of political obligation is a condition for legitimacy. Some forms of identity –maybe those that are more cosmopolitan, more multi-level or just less exclusive -are likely to be more compatible than others with a sense of political obligation to a transnational political order such as the EU. This PhD will identify ways of distinguishing different forms of identity and of investigating whether some rare more compatible than others with the legitimacy of European political order.
Phd Programme:
The successful candidate will be enrolled in one of the PhD programmes of the Faculty of International and Political Studiesat the Jagiellonian University and the work will result in a doctorate in political science or humanities/ cultural studies depending on the candidate’s research proposal. The recruited candidate will be automatically admitted to the PhD programme. If the person who is hired has a disciplinary background other than political science/cultural studies, additional courses may be required to complete the PhD programme.
Teaching:
The successful candidate will be obliged to teach or perform tasks connected to teaching in the amount of 15h/year.

Two important eligibility condition sapply to Marie Sklodowska-Curie Action (MSCA) Innovative Training Networks(ITN):
- Candidates cannot have resided and carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Poland for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to 1 September 2017. If it is not evident from the application that this criterionis met, please include an explanation as part of your application.
- Candidates must be in the first four years (full-time equivalent) of her/his research career and not already be in the possession of a doctoral degree. Further qualifications for the position:
- Master’s degree in political science, media studies, sociology or equivalent social science degree, which includes at least two years of study at MA level. The master’s thesis must have been submitted before the application deadline. A prerequisite for taking up the position is the successful completion of a master’s degree.
- Strong academic record
- English languageproficiency. If you are not a native English speaker, or if the language of instruction at your previous university was not English, we will ask you to provide evidence of strong English language skills. Please include English language test results in your application if this applies to you. English language tests should not be more than two years old at the time of application.
