Balliol has existed as a community of scholars on its present Broad Street site without interruption since about 1263. By this token it claims to be the oldest college in Oxford, and in the English-speaking world. For students, academic life at Balliol is challenging and stimulating. Balliol admits people of exceptional talent, regardless of their background, and students can study here in almost all disciplines represented in the University. Consequently there is a diversity of people and views in College, which promotes discussion; and all students are encouraged to think knowledgeably and independently.
One full scholarship is available for applicants who are ordinarily resident in the EU and who are applying to a full- or part-time DPhil in History, specialising in French history.
The scholarship covers course fees, college fees and a grant for living costs for full-time students of at least £14,296 (students on part-time courses will receive a study support grant instead). Awards are made for the full duration of your fee liability for the agreed course. The scholarship is jointly funded by the University and anonymous donors in honour of Sir Colin R Lucas, a historian and previous Vice-Chancellor of the University of Oxford.
The scholarship is only tenable at Balliol College. All eligible applicants will be considered for this scholarship, regardless of which college (if any) you state as your preference on the graduate application form. However, successful applicants will be transferred to Balliol College in order to take up the scholarship.
There is no separate application process for this scholarship: to be considered, submit your application for graduate study by the relevant January deadline (20 January 2017)
