One-year Doctoral Studentships for International Students in UK, 2017 for Phd

Applications are invited for a number of one-year studentships for new or continuing doctoral candidates only (Masters students are not eligible), within the field of urban and regional studies. Only applicants whose nationality falls into the countries listed in Groups B and C of the World Bank classification will be eligible to apply.

The aims of FURS are to ‘promote and improve social scientific research, education and scholarship in the field of urban, rural and regional studies’.

The Foundation for Urban and Regional Studies Ltd was set up in 1995 as a charity under the Companies Act. Its main source of income is the surplus generated by the International Journal of Urban and Regional Research, the leading critical urban and regional studies journal established in 1977 and published by Wiley-Blackwell. IJURR is run by a wholly-owned subsidiary of FURS.

Students need to demonstrate that they have a good level of written and spoken English.

Eligibility Criteria

Funding is only offered to those students who are working within the field of urban and regional studies. Only applicants whose nationality falls into the countries listed in Groups B and C of the World Bank classification will be eligible to apply. Preference will be given to students who completed their first degree (BA/BSc) in their home country or another country from Groups B or C.

Offered Benefits

The one-year studentship for doctoral research is renewable annually for a further one or two years subject to satisfactory progress reports: the value of this studentship is currently worth £12,000 per annum. The Trustees have the discretion to increase this in the light of special circumstances or hardship. No additional support can be given towards travel expenses; the studentship can be spent on fees but is not intended to cover the full costs of being a student and applicants will, therefore, need to apply for other sources of funding.

Application Process

Applicants must submit the completed form via the FURS website.
