The New Zealand Agricultural Greenhouse Gas Research Centre (NZAGRC), in collaboration with the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI), is pleased to announce a multi-year International PhD and Postdoctoral Fellowships programme tailored for Early Career Researchers.

The programme aims to address the imperative need for cultivating a robust research pipeline to effectively tackle agricultural greenhouse gas emissions reduction, ultimately benefiting New Zealand’s farming community.The New Zealand Agricultural Greenhouse Gas Research Centre (NZAGRC) is a leading institution dedicated to addressing the pressing issue of agricultural greenhouse gas emissions in New Zealand. Established in collaboration with the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI), NZAGRC conducts cutting-edge research and develops innovative solutions aimed at reducing agricultural emissions while ensuring sustainable farming practices. Through partnerships with universities, research organizations, and industry stakeholders, NZAGRC plays a pivotal role in fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions from the agricultural sector.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Eligible Countries: Open to all nationalities
  • Acceptable Course or Subjects: Scholarships are available for any subject offered by New Zealand universities
  • Admissible Criteria:
    • Candidates must meet specific criteria as outlined for PhD scholarships and post-doctoral fellowships.
    • PhD applicants must be eligible to register as a candidate for a Doctoral degree in a New Zealand institution by December 30, 2024.
    • Post-doctoral fellowship applicants should have completed their PhD degree no longer than 8 years prior to the application.
    • Consideration will be given to diversity in skills, with encouragement for those interested in contributing to M?ori research and knowledge capability.

Offered Benefits

  • PhD Scholarships Include:
    • Tax-free annual stipend for up to three years
    • Coverage of New Zealand university annual tuition fees and associated student levies
    • Contribution to research and publication costs
    • Travel allowance for presenting at an international conference
  • Post-Doctoral Fellowships Include:
    • Salary costs for up to two years
    • Contribution towards research-related expenses
    • Funding for the host organization, covering research programme and overhead costs.

Application Process

The application process for the Early Career Researcher Funding programme consists of two steps:

  1. Step 1: Call for Projects (April 8 – April 30):
    • Open call for project proposals from New Zealand universities and research providers.
    • Projects must focus on agricultural greenhouse gas emissions reduction and may adopt either a science or M?ori research approach.
    • Evaluation criteria include capability development, research impact, and excellence.
  2. Step 2: Call for Applicants (June 1 – June 30):
    • Following the selection of projects, the NZAGRC will initiate an applicant selection process.
    • This process includes advertising positions, short-listing candidates, and conducting candidate interviews.
    • Eligible candidates are encouraged to apply based on the specific criteria for PhD scholarships or post-doctoral fellowships.
