The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) invites applications for the Caribbean Research – PhD Scholarships 2025, a prestigious programme supporting PhD research related to the Caribbean part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Open to graduates with a master’s degree, this multidisciplinary scholarship offers up to €350,000 for research projects lasting up to 48 months (or 72 months part-time).

To be eligible for the scholarships, applicants must hold a master’s degree (or equivalent) and must not already have a PhD or a fully funded PhD position. Applications must be submitted individually and in agreement with a proposed PhD supervisor and host research organization.

NWO Caribbean Research-PhD Scholarships in Netherlands Established in 1979, Universiteit van Curaçao (University of Curaçao) is a non-profit public higher education institution located in the large town of Willemstad (population range of 50,000-249,999 inhabitants). Officially accredited and/or recognized by the Ministerio di Enseñansa, Siensia, Kultura i Deporte, Curaçao (Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sport, Curaçao), Universiteit van Curaçao (UoC) is a coeducational higher education institution. Universiteit van Curaçao (UoC) offers courses and programs leading to officially recognized higher education degrees such as bachelor degrees in several areas of study. Eligibility Criteria

  • Eligible Countries: Applicants must be born in or residing on one of the following islands: Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao, Saba, Sint Eustatius, or Sint Maarten.

  • Acceptable Course or Subjects: The scholarship will be awarded in any subject relevant to the Caribbean region, offered by the host university or research institution.

  • Admissible Criteria: To be eligible, applicants must:

    • Hold a university master’s degree (or equivalent) at the time of submitting the pre-proposal.

    • Not already possess a PhD title.

    • Not hold a fully paid PhD position or receive full-time funding for PhD research at the time of submission.

    • Apply as an individual (not as a duo or group).

    • Apply under one of the two categories:

      • Category A: PhD trajectory at the University of Aruba, University of Curaçao, or University of St. Martin.

      • Category B: PhD trajectory at another research organization. Applicants in this category must either be born on one of the six Caribbean islands or currently reside there.

Offered Benefits

  • A maximum grant amount of €350,000 per project.

  • Salary funding for a PhD position of up to 48 months (1.0 FTE) or 72 months (0.65 FTE).

  • Up to 15% of the salary portion can be used for project-specific material costs.

  • Up to 10% of the material costs may be used for expenses related to foreign research organizations.

  • Funding includes support for knowledge utilization and other eligible project expenses.

Application Process

The application process consists of the following stages:

  1. Statement of Intent – Deadline: Tuesday, 24 June 2025

  2. Pre-Proposal – Deadline: Tuesday, 16 September 2025

  3. Full Proposal – Deadline: Tuesday, 24 February 2026

Applications must be submitted by the PhD candidate themselves in agreement with the intended PhD supervisor(s) and research organization. All submissions are done online through the NWO portal.
