The NAEd/Spencer Dissertation Fellowship is designed to encourage a new generation of scholars from a wide range of disciplines and professional fields to conduct research relevant to improving education. This prestigious fellowship supports candidates whose dissertation projects bring innovative and insightful approaches to the history, theory, analysis, or application of formal and informal education.

Applicants must be doctoral candidates at a U.S. graduate school, regardless of citizenship. They should have completed all pre-dissertation requirements by June 1 of the award year and must propose a research project focused on education. The fellowship is open to students from any discipline, with a demonstrated commitment to conducting educational research post-graduation. Only individual applications are accepted.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Eligible Countries: All nationalities
  • Acceptable Course or Subjects: The scholarship is open to any subject, provided the dissertation topic focuses primarily on education.
  • Admissible Criteria:
    • Applicants must be candidates for a doctoral degree at a graduate school within the United States.
    • Applicants must complete all pre-dissertation requirements by June 1 of the award year.
    • Applicants must propose an education research project.
    • Group applications are not accepted; only individual applications are considered.
    • The fellowship is open to graduate students from any academic discipline or professional field. Past fellows have come from fields such as anthropology, architecture, art history, communications, economics, education, history, linguistics, literature, philosophy, political science, psychology, public health, religion, and sociology.

Offered Benefits

  • Fellows receive $27,500 for one academic year, distributed in two installments.

  • Access to mentorship from an NAEd member or another esteemed scholar to provide guidance and support throughout the academic year.
