The University of Hamburg is offering Merit Scholarships to support outstanding international students across all subjects and degree levels. This program provides up to €992 per month for 12 months, enabling recipients to focus fully on their studies and personal development.

To be eligible for the scholarships, applicants must be international students (non-German citizens) enrolled in a degree program at the university for at least two semesters, or one semester for 2-year master’s programs. They must not be eligible for the German federal student loan scheme (BAföG) and should demonstrate strong academic performance.

Merit Scholarships for International Students at Universität Hamburg, Germany Founded in 1919, Universität Hamburg (University of Hamburg) is a non-profit public higher education institution located in the urban setting of the large city of Hamburg (population range of 1,000,000-5,000,000 inhabitants). Officially accredited and/or recognized by the Behörde für Wissenschaft, Forschung und Gleichstellung, Hamburg (Authority for Science, Research and Equality, Hamburg), Universität Hamburg (UHH) is a very large (uniRank enrollment range: 35,000-39,999 students) coeducational higher education institution. Universität Hamburg (UHH) offers courses and programs leading to officially recognized higher education degrees such as pre-bachelor degrees (i.e. certificates, diplomas, associate or foundation degrees), bachelor degrees, master degrees, doctorate degrees in several areas of study. Eligibility Criteria

  • Eligible Countries: All countries except Germany

  • Acceptable Course or Subjects: The scholarship will be awarded in any subject offered by Universität Hamburg.

  • Admissible Criteria: To be eligible, applicants must:

    • Be enrolled at Universität Hamburg for at least 2 semesters in their subject and be pursuing a degree.

      • Students in 2-year Master’s programs can apply after completing 1 semester.

    • Not hold German citizenship.

    • Not be eligible for the German federal student loan scheme (BAföG).

Offered Benefits

  • Monthly funding of up to €992.

  • Award duration: 12 months (2 semesters).

  • Renewable for a maximum of 2 years with reapplication.

Application Process

Applications must be submitted online via the Universität Hamburg scholarship application portal. Applicants must also present the following documents in person to the program coordinator on the specified dates:

  • Non-EU citizens: Residence permit.

  • EU citizens: Identity card and registration certificate of residence (“Meldebescheinigung”) in Germany.
