The Melbourne Social Equity Institute is offering up to three Strategic PhD Scholarships for 2026 to support doctoral research on social equity issues. Open to Australian and New Zealand citizens or permanent residents, the award provides at least $39,500 per year, additional research support funds, and entry into the Institute’s Doctoral Academy.

To be eligible for the PhD Scholarship, open to Australian and New Zealand citizens or Australian permanent residents who meet the University of Melbourne’s entry requirements for a PhD program. Applicants must secure admission into a PhD at the University, and the award is conditional upon their enrolment.

  • Acceptable Course or Subjects: The scholarship is available for research in any discipline offered by the University of Melbourne, including agricultural and veterinary sciences, architecture, arts, business, education, engineering, environment, health, IT, law, music, and sciences.

  • Admissible Criteria:

    • Applicants must be Australian or New Zealand citizens or Australian permanent residents.

    • Candidates must meet the University of Melbourne’s PhD admission requirements and secure acceptance into a PhD program.

    • The scholarship is conditional upon PhD enrolment at the University of Melbourne.

  • At least $39,500 per annum under the Australian Government Research Training Program (RTP).

  • An additional $2,000 per annum in research support (up to $6,000 across candidature).

  • Automatic entry into the Melbourne Social Equity Institute’s Doctoral Academy.
