 The Melbourne Social Equity Institute at the University of Melbourne is pleased to announce the availability of up to three Australian Government Research Training Program (RTP) scholarships for candidates interested in undertaking doctoral research on social equity issues, commencing in 2025.

To be eligible for the Melbourne Social Equity Institute Doctoral Research Scholarships, applicants must be Australian or New Zealand citizens or Australian permanent residents, and must be accepted into a PhD program at the University of Melbourne.

Melbourne Social Equity Institute PhD Scholarships, Australia Established in 1853, The University of Melbourne is a non-profit public higher education institution located in the urban setting of the large city of Melbourne (population range of 1,000,000-5,000,000 inhabitants), Victoria. Eligibility Criteria

  • Eligible Countries: Australia, New Zealand
  • Acceptable Course or Subjects: The scholarship will be awarded in any subject offered by the University of Melbourne.
  • Admissible Criteria: To be eligible, the applicants must meet all the following criteria:
    • Australian or New Zealand citizen, or Australian permanent resident
    • Acceptance into a PhD program at the University of Melbourne
    • Available to commence studies in 2025
    • Completed tertiary studies equivalent to a 4-year honours degree with a minimum result equivalent to a first-class Honours (80%). For underrepresented or disadvantaged backgrounds, a second-class Honours Division A (75%) is acceptable.
    • Excellent interpersonal, cross-cultural, independent work, teamwork, and communication skills
    • Strong research idea with agreement from a supervisor or team of supervisors.

  • Full exemption from payment of student fees at the University of Melbourne
  • A stipend of $37,000 per annum (tax-free) for 3.5 years
  • Allowances as per the Graduate Research Scholarship Terms & Conditions
  • Additional $2000 per annum (up to $6000 during candidature) in research support funds
  • Automatic entry into the Institute’s Doctoral Academy and/or interdisciplinary PhD Program in Migration, Statelessness and Refugee Studies.

    • Complete the Expression of Interest form.
    • Download the EOI Form
    • Include a Curriculum Vitae (up to 2 pages), brief research proposal (up to 4 pages), academic transcripts, evidence of in-principle support from a proposed supervisor, and Masters/Honours thesis examiners’ reports (if applicable).
    • Email completed form to by 5.00pm AEST on Monday 2 September 2024.
