Max Kade Clinical Clerkships

Since 1996, The American Austrian Foundation and the Max Kade Foundation have been awarding 4th-year American and Austrian medical students from our partner medical schools one month clinical clerkships in Austria or the United States. The program aims to supplement the students´ education and broaden their experience by exposing them to a foreign culture and health care system.

Eligibility Criteria

For American students:

American medical students from the AAF partner medical schools in their 4th year of study.

For Austrian students:

Austrian medical students are eligible to complete a clinical clerkship in the US in their final year (6th year) of medical school. Due to the elaborate selection process, candidates need to apply already in the 5th year of medical school. Please see our website for application deadlines.
During your stay in the US, it is obligatory that you are still enrolled at your home university, which means – in order to be eligible – your graduation date needs to be after you have completed the clinical rotation in the US.

Offered Benefits

For American students:

The AAF and the Max Kade Foundation provide a travel stipend and pocket money, as well as accommodation during a one-month rotation in Austria. Rotating in Austria can be quite different from US rotations, as they are largely unstructured and require fellows to take the initiative to communicate with doctors and residents. In Austrian hospitals the working language is German. If you expect to communicate with patients, you will need a working knowledge of German.
The travel grant and pocket money stipend is paid in two installments: 50% upon receipt of a confirmed itinerary and 50% upon receipt of the final report. The fellowship does not cover meals or incidental expenses. If you plan to travel on weekends, you should have personal funds available.

For Austrian students:

Each U.S. medical school has slightly different requirements; however, candidates must have completed the following electives prior to starting the clinical clerkship: Internal Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics/Gynecology, Pediatrics and Psychiatry. Please be aware that you apply at the American Austrian Foundation first. The American Austrian Foundation selects and assigns the candidates to one of the host institutions. Once candidates have been selected and assigned, they have to apply again directly at their host institution. All required information regarding the application for the host institutions can be found on the respective websites. Applications must be submitted 6 month in advance directly to the host institution.
