Novo Nordisk Foundation is offering Mads Øvlisen PhD Scholarships in Art History and Practice-Based Artistic Research. This scholarship program is exclusively open to applicants from around the world who wish to pursue their PhD journey within art history and practice artistic research based in Denmark.

To be eligible for a Mads Øvlisen PhD scholarship, applicants must hold a master’s degree or its equivalent before submitting the application. The program offers a unique opportunity for students to engage in advanced research in art history and practice-based artistic research.

Established in1989, the Novo Nordisk Foundation is the largest foundation based in Denmark. It offers international research and training level programs. It provides great opportunities for progress and success in their research areas. This independent Danish foundation with corporate interests was established in 1989 to improve people’s lives by improving health through education and developing a knowledge-based sustainable society.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Eligible Countries: Open to citizens from all countries is eligible to apply.
  • Acceptable Course or Subjects: PhD scholarships within art history research before or after 1900 or practice-based artistic research in art or crating.
  • Admissible Criteria: To be eligible, the applicants must meet all the given criteria:
  • Applicants must hold a Master’s degree or its equivalent before submitting the application.
  • During the PhD program, candidates must be enrolled at a doctoral degree-awarding institution, such as a university, and be anchored at an administrating host institution in Denmark.
  • The host institution, where the candidate will be employed and conduct the majority of their work, can be a university, museum, or art academy.
  • Enrollment and hosting letters from the respective institutions must be attached to the application.
  • Each applicant may submit only one application for a specific purpose/project per calendar year.

Offered Benefits

The Mads Øvlisen PhD Scholarship program provides funding of up to DKK 2,450,000 per grant. The grant covers salary, operational costs, equipment, publication costs, conference participation, relocation expenses, travel costs, collaborative activities, tuition fees, bench fees, and administrative support.

Application Process

  • How to Apply: To apply for this scholarship program, applications must be submitted through the online application system, NORMA. Applications can be submitted in either Danish or English.
  • Supporting Documents: The students are required to present the following documents:
  • CV
  • Hosting letter
  • Enrolment agreement
  • Proof of obtaining a Master’s degree or its equivalent.
  • Detailed project proposal, including research questions, hypothesis, methodology, and/or empirical data.
  • Academic qualifications of the applicant.
  • For practice-based projects: Artistic or curatorial qualifications of the applicant.
  • Feasibility of the project, including its relevance to the research environment at the Danish host institution
  • Admission Requirements: Applicants must be enrolled at a Master’s degree-awarding institution in Denmark and be anchored at an administrating host institution in Denmark.
  • Language Requirement: Students must be proficient in written and spoken English language.
