MA and PhD Scholarships in Medieval Studies at Central European University

Applicants to the one-year MA program are expected to

  • hold a first degree (Diploma, MA), or
  • have completed at least four years of previous studies (BA, MA) in history, art history, archaeology, literature, philosophy, or any discipline relevant to the study of the Middle Ages.
  • In addition to the general CEU admission requirements, applicants are required to submit a 500-word, English-language description of their proposed research topic, specifying the primary sources and related secondary literature (see more in the attachment).
  • Applicants may also be required to take a source language aptitude test. (Please see the section Entry Language Requirements).

Applicants for the two-year MA in Comparative History: Late Antique, Medieval and Renaissance Studies must have:

  • a minimum three-year Bachelor's or equivalent.
  • In addition to the general CEU admission requirements, applicants are required to submit a 500-word English-language research proposal.
  • Applicants may also be required to take a source language aptitude test. (Please see the section Entry Language Requirements).

Applicants seeking to pursue a PhD at CEU’'s Department of Medieval Studies should:

  • hold a Master's degree or equivalent in any field of Medieval, Late Antique, Byzantine or early Ottoman studies including art history and archaeology of the Middle Ages. Quite frequently, we also admit Classicists with an interest in later periods.
  • In addition to the application materials required by CEU, applicants to the Medieval Studies Doctoral Program shall submit (typed and in the English language)
  • a summary of their Master’s thesis of no more than 1,000 words evidencing, if possible and/or necessary, the interdisciplinary character of the previous studies of the late antique, medieval or early modern periods;
  • a detailed PhD dissertation proposal of no more than 3,000 words (excluding bibliography);
  • a PhD dissertation outline and timeline of no more than 1,000 words.

MA and PhD Scholarships in Medieval Studies at Central European University Founded in 1991, Közép-Európai Egyetem (Central European University) is a non-profit private higher education institution located in the urban setting of the large city of Budapest (population range of 1,000,000-5,000,000 inhabitants). Officially accredited and/or recognized by the Magyar Felsooktatási Akkreditációs Bizottság (Hungarian Accreditation Committee), Közép-Európai Egyetem (CEU) is a very small (uniRank enrollment range: 1,000-1,999 students) coeducational higher education institution. Közép-Európai Egyetem (CEU) offers courses and programs leading to officially recognized higher education degrees such as master degrees, doctorate degrees in several areas of study. Application Process

Program Specification:

  • The application package must include a Research Proposal submitted in a separate document. Its title has to be entered into the relevant section of the application form. For program-specific requirements and guidance about writing a successful research proposal, visit the website of the program concerned.

  • Language requirements: for the completion of the MA studies at the Department of Medieval Studies all students must have a working knowledge (in other words, the ability to read sources) of at least one source language (a literary and vernacular language from the pre-modern period).

    Evidence of existing source language competence at the time of application is not essential, but it is an advantage in the application assessment. In certain cases, the department may require that the applicants take a source language aptitude test during the application procedure. The results of this test are for training needs assessment and information purposes.

  • English proficiency: applicants who meet the admission criteria need to submit a Proof of English Proficiency (see General information) in their application package. No further English language examination is required by the department.

  • Following the initial evaluation of all the application materials, the selection committee conducts a competitive re-evaluation and invites successful applicants for individual interviews conducted by one or more faculty members of the department either in the selected applicant’s city of residence (if feasible) or on Skype.
