The Leverhulme Trust is seeking academically strong and highly motivated candidates for the Early Career Fellowships for the academic year 2025/2026.

To be eligible for the Fellowship, applicants must not have held a full-time permanent academic post in a UK university or comparable institution. Candidates must hold a doctorate or have submitted their thesis for viva voce by the application deadline. Applicants should not have held postdoctoral positions totaling three or more years. The fellowship is open to those currently employed in the UK academic sector, or who hold a UK degree.The Leverhulme Trust is a prominent grant-making organization in the United Kingdom, established in 1925 by the will of William Hesketh Lever, the founder of Lever Brothers. The Trust’s primary focus is on supporting research and education, providing substantial funding across various academic disciplines. Annually, it distributes over £100 million to fund research projects, fellowships, studentships, and scholarships aimed at fostering originality and excellence in scholarship

Eligibility Criteria

  • Eligible Countries: Open to researchers currently employed or educated in the UK
  • Acceptable Course or Subjects: Fellowships are awarded in all fields except those involving clinical research, applied medical studies, or areas focused on human/animal disease and disabilities.
  • Admissible Criteria:
    • Applicants must not hold or have held a permanent full-time academic post.
    • Candidates must hold a doctorate or have submitted their thesis for viva voce by 4 pm, 20 February 2025.
    • Applicants must not have been in academic positions exceeding three years.
    • Candidates without UK degrees must have been employed in UK academia for at least four months by the application deadline.
    • A significant piece of publishable research must be proposed that is distinct from the applicant’s doctoral work.
    • Fellowships are tenable at UK universities with research degree-awarding powers.

Offered Benefits

  • Salary Contribution: The Leverhulme Trust will cover 50% of the fellow’s salary, up to a maximum of £28,000 per year.
  • Research Expenses: Fellows may request up to £6,000 annually for research activities, including:
    • Conference attendance and organization
    • Travel and subsistence for research trips
    • Laboratory consumables and equipment
    • Essential book purchases (up to £1,000 per year)
  • Duration: Fellowships are tenable for three years on a full-time basis or part-time for proportionately longer periods due to health or personal commitments.

Fellowships commence between 1 September 2025 and 1 May 2026. Successful applicants will be notified of decisions by 23 May 2025.

  2. Complete the online application form, ensuring it is approved by both the host department head and a university administrative officer before submission.
  3. Submit the application before the deadline: 20 February 2025, 4 pm.
  4. Nominated referees must upload their references within three weeks of the application deadline.
