Leipzig University is delighted to announce the availability of State Postgraduate Scholarships aimed at supporting doctoral projects. These scholarships are provided in accordance with the Saxon freedom of higher education act (Sächsisches Hochschulfreiheitsgesetz, SächsHSFG) and the regulations for the Saxon scholarship programme (Sächsische Landesstipendienverordnung, SächsLStipVO).

To be eligible for the State Postgraduate Scholarships at Leipzig University, applicants must be prospective doctoral researchers in any subject area at the university holding an above-average degree in their relevant academic discipline. They must be enrolled in a structured doctoral program at Leipzig University and must not have their doctoral project financed by public funds in another way or be employed by the university.Founded in 1409, Leipzig University is one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in Germany. Leipzig University State Postgraduate Scholarships in Germany for Master Established in 1409, Universität Leipzig (University of Leipzig) is a non-profit public higher education institution located in the urban setting of the medium-sized city of Leipzig (population range of 500,000-1,000,000 inhabitants), Saxony. Officially accredited and/or recognized by the Sächsisches Staatsministerium für Wissenschaft und Kunst (Saxon State Ministry of Science and the Arts), Universität Leipzig is a large (uniRank enrollment range: 25,000-29,999 students) coeducational higher education institution. Universität Leipzig offers courses and programs leading to officially recognized higher education degrees such as pre-bachelor degrees (i.e. certificates, diplomas, associate or foundation degrees), bachelor degrees, master degrees, doctorate degrees in several areas of study.   • Admissible Criteria: To be eligible, the applicants must meet the following criteria:
  • Prospective doctoral researchers of all subject areas at Leipzig University.
  • Holding an above-average degree in the relevant academic discipline.
  • Must be enrolled in a structured doctoral program at Leipzig University.
  • The doctoral project must not be financed by public funds in another way.
  • The candidate must not be employed by the University.

Application Process

  1. Application for admission to a structured doctoral program at Leipzig University.
  2. Application for a state scholarship for the first time (submit by post to the Studentenwerk).
  3. CV (in tabular form) including a report on academic education to date.
  4. An expert opinion from your supervising professor.
  5. Description of the doctoral project (max. 10 pages).
  6. Time and work schedule for the entire required doctoral period.
  7. University degree certificates qualifying the candidate for doctoral studies.
  8. If necessary, application for separate grants (can also be submitted during the funding period).
  9. If a state postgraduate scholarship is granted, a certificate of enrolment must also be submitted as proof of admission to a structured doctoral programme at Leipzig University.
