Lancaster University Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences International Doctoral Scholarships for PhD Established in 1964, Lancaster University is a non-profit public higher education institution located in the rural setting of the medium-sized town of Lancaster (population range of 10,000-49,999 inhabitants), North West England. Officially accredited and/or recognized by the Privy Council, Lancaster University (LU) is a large (uniRank enrollment range: 10,000-14,999 students) coeducational higher education institution. Lancaster University (LU) offers courses and programs leading to officially recognized higher education degrees such as bachelor degrees, master degrees, doctorate degrees in several areas of study. This 55 years old higher-education institution has a selective admission policy based on students' past academic record and grades. The admission rate range is 20-30% making this UK higher education organization a very selective institution. International applicants are eligible to apply for enrollment.

  • Admissible Criteria: To be eligible, the applicants must meet all the given criteria:
  • Applicants must already hold an offer of a place to study a postgraduate doctoral program in any department in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences before applying for a scholarship, and
  • Applicants must be due to commence their studies during the 2023-24 academic year.

Offered Benefits

  • Lancaster University is currently providing £17,688. The cost of the tuition fee plus a maintenance award is equal to the UKRI minimum award.
  • This award is subject to satisfactory progress on the applicants’ program and is pro-rata for part-time programs.
  • Two of the scholarships are reserved for Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic (BAME) applicants from the UK.

Application Process

Before applying for a doctoral scholarship, applicants must already hold an offer of a place to study in a department in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. They should be due to start their studies between October 2023 and February 2024.

  • Supporting Documents: As part of the application, the applicants must submit all the following required documents: An official copy of academic transcripts of previous higher education (college/university) degrees or other courses, two references, at least one must be an academic reference, copies of English language certificate/test results, research proposal, and a personal statement (minimum 100 words) as part of the application process.
  • Submit a copy of your passport if you are an international student and need a student visa to study in the UK.
  • Admission Requirements: If you are applying for a Practice-based Research PhD you will need to submit a portfolio with your application.  In addition to the above requirements, the university requires a PhD Proposal Form.
  • Language Requirement: The  English language requirements vary depending on the course and department.
