To encourage and bring in foreign researchers to pursue their postdoctoral studies in Belgium, KU Leuven is introducing the Roger Dillemans Fund for the academic year 2025-2026.

The educational award is open to international students from select countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America who wish to pursue a second master’s degree at KU Leuven. Applicants must demonstrate academic excellence, achieving distinction in their prior master’s program, and show a strong motivation to contribute to sustainable development.Located in Belgium, KU Leuven is one of Europe’s most prestigious research universities, renowned for its academic excellence and innovation. Founded in 1425, it is the oldest Catholic university still in operation and consistently ranks among the top universities worldwide. KU Leuven offers a diverse range of programs across disciplines, fostering a vibrant international community with students from over 150 countries.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Eligible Countries: Africa: Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, DR Congo, Ethiopia, Guinea, Cameroon, Kenya, Madagascar, Mali, Morocco, Mozambique, Rwanda, Senegal, Tanzania, Uganda, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Niger
  • Asia: Cambodia, Philippines, Indonesia, Palestinian Territories, Vietnam
  • Latin America: Bolivia, Cuba, Ecuador, Haiti, Nicaragua, Peru
  • Acceptable Course or Subjects: The scholarship will be awarded for any subject offered by KU Leuven that meets the criteria for a second master’s degree (60 ECTS).
  • Admissible Criteria: To be eligible, applicants must:
  1. Academic Achievement:
    • Hold an initial master’s degree from KU Leuven by the end of the academic year in which they apply, or
    • Complete the first phase of their additional master’s program (120 ECTS) at KU Leuven by the end of the academic year in which they apply.
  2. Excellence in Performance:
    • Demonstrate academic excellence in previous studies with distinction (cum laude) in their initial master’s program.
  3. Motivation and Goals:
    • Exhibit motivation and professional goals reflecting their capacity to transfer knowledge, develop sustainable solutions, or undertake extension activities aligned with the program’s themes.
  4. Commitment to Change:
    • Show potential and dedication to becoming an “agent of change” upon completing their studies.

The scholarship provides the following:

  • Living Expenses: €8,600 per year
  • Tuition Fee Waiver
  • Health Insurance: Affiliation with a Belgian Health Insurance Company
  • Third Party Liability Insurance

Application Process

  1. Gain admission to the master’s program of choice at KU Leuven by following the Application Procedure if starting a new program in the next academic year.
  2. Complete the scholarship application form, available from 15 February 2025, and include:
    • A detailed overview of prior study results at KU Leuven.
    • A letter of motivation highlighting competence in sustainable development themes and societal impact.
    • A recommendation letter from a referee at KU Leuven.
